It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1 Corinthians 13:7
As I was searching for a picture to go with this post, I stumbled across the google search term “human protective instincts test”. I didn’t find a test, but I did find some articles about protective instincts – mothers protective of their children, men protective of their women, the fight or flight response. These are all pretty straightforward and I would guess people generally agree that these protective instincts exist.
So it makes sense for protection to be a characteristic of love that falls into the always category. This kind of love is “agape,” or unconditional love. Or some call it charity. It’s a pouring out of love with nothing expected in return. Protection is a good example of this. Those who protect the ones they love usually put themselves in harm’s way, whether it’s from a violent person, something that could cause injury, or biting words. In essence, the protector is choosing to put the protectee’s needs first.
I can’t say that I’ve felt this protective instinct much. I’ve had my share of protecting nieces and nephews from things like a missed step, going underwater, or bonking into something, but that’s about it. I’ve more experience as a protectee, with a father, step-father, 3 brothers, and a boyfriend. I think I’m good. Not to mention the protective women in my life.
Of course this all points back to the one who protects us all. God can protect us from the things other people can’t protect us from, and from the things we can’t protect ourselves from. He is always there to protect us. He never takes a break or lets His guard down. Like that dog up there. Always on the lookout. And He is prepared for those things that we know are bad but we run towards anyway. The things that are easy to get to. The things that can grab us quickly. As long as we hide in his arms, He will always protect us.
p.s. do you believe in guardian angels? Maybe they’re like the sacred secret service.
