Devotions for June, Entry 16 {self-seeking}

It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 1 Corinthians 13:5

I can think of two reasons why someone would be rude:
1. HALT – hungry, angry, lonely, tired. If I am rude, it is often because I am one or more of these things.
2. Insecurity. When people are rude, it might be a defense mechanism, so that the person feels they have the upper hand over someone else. It’s a powerful feeling to have control over someone else’s emotions.

Bottom line – think before you speak, or make that facial expression (guilty). Put the other person first. Which brings me to…

Self-seeking is a small way to live. If you only make decisions based on personal gain, you will be lonely once you’ve gotten everything you wanted. When you’re self-seeking, or self-centered, you are shutting everyone else out.

You’re also doing a disservice to yourself. Each person’s purpose in life, I guarantee, is to accomplish something that is greater than themselves. If you strive to simply achieve your self-seeking goals, you’re short-changing yourself. God can do so much more if you would let him. And life is way more fun with other people in it.

p.s. In other words, grow up! These two negative attributes can quickly be remedied. Just stop and think.
